Avon Hockey Club History
The Avon Hockey Club was formed in February 2001 with the amalgamation of the Woolston and Pegasus Hockey Clubs. Both clubs operated in the eastern suburbs of the city and in reasonable proximity to one another. Woolston, originally the Marathon Hockey Club started in the late 40's, it changed its name later to Woolston to identify with the district in which it was based. In the 70's the club amalgamated with the Rawhiti Women's Hockey Club which enabled it to field both Men's and Women's teams in the local competitions. Pegasus arose from the amalgamation of the Technical Old Boy's and West Old Boy's Hockey Clubs and based themselves at Both clubs over the course of a number of years, provided players to National team including Olympics with Ross Gillespie from Woolston, coach of the successful Gold Medal team of 76.
